Surgery Patient Information
Blood Donation For Patients
Most patients will donate 1 unit of blood just prior to surgery,
which will be drawn the morning of surgery and will be drawn off
in surgery holding area.
Some patients will be required to donate an additional unit of
blood and should do so at least 1 week prior to surgery and no more
than 30 days away from the actual surgery.
Cheryl will inform you if you need to donate other than the day
of surgery.
THERE ARE OTHERS BLOOD CENTERS IN TOWN, AND OUT OF TOWN. IF YOU
USE ONE OF THESE LOCATIONS, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU TELL THEM
WHAT HOSPITAL YOU ARE USING AND THE DATE OF SURGERY.
THERE IS A FORM FOR BLOOD DONATIONS IN YOUR PACKET. YOU MUST TAKE
THIS FORM WITH YOU TO THE BLOOD CENTER AT THE TIME OF YOUR DONATION.
PLEASE VERIFY THAT THE BLOOD CENTER IS ON YOUR INSURANCE PLAN.
IF YOU DO NOT, THE BLOOD CENTER WILL CHARGE YOU A FEE FOR THEIR
SERVICE.
IF YOU ARE HAVING SOMEONE DONATE FOR YOU, HE OR SHE MUST HAVE THE
SAME BLOOD TYPE. YOU AND THE DESIGNATED DONOR MUST GO TO THE BLOOD
CENTER TO BE TESTED TO SEE IF YOUR BLOOD TYPES ARE COMPATIBLE.
